Illinois Driving Records and Abstract Codes
The Illinois Secretary of State maintains multiple versions of an individual’s driving record. Each type of driving abstract serves a specific purpose and contains varying levels of detail.
- Public Driving Record: This version provides limited information and is often used for basic verification of driving privileges. It may include license status, expiration date, and class type but omits detailed offense history.
- Court Purposes Abstract: This is a complete version of an individual’s driving record and includes all sanctions, suspensions, revocations, and traffic violations. It is used in legal proceedings, including court cases, driver’s license reinstatement hearings, and evaluations for substance use treatment.
- Internal Secretary of State Abstract: This is the most detailed driving record and may include confidential notations or comments used by the Secretary of State during formal or informal administrative hearings. These internal records are not available to the public but may be reviewed during a driver’s license hearing.
